INTRODUCTION
On-the-job
training (OJT) is one of the best training methods because it is planned,
organized, and conducted at the employee's worksite. OJT will generally be the
primary method used for broadening employee skills and increasing productivity.
It is particularly appropriate for developing proficiency skills unique to an
employee's job - especially jobs that are relatively easy to learn and require
locally-owned equipment and facilities. This is one method by which
students is given a chance to apply the theories and computations that they
have learned from the school. It also helps the students to acquire relevant
knowledge and skills by performing in actual work setting. Colleges and universities
require their students to undergo such training within a specific number of
hours as part of the curriculum.
Smart
Communications, Inc., is the
Philippines' leading wireless services provider with 47.7 million subscribers
on its GSM network. It is a privilege to be part of their OJT program for a
student like me to gain knowledge and skills in the field of
telecommunications. Being hired as an intern on the company is such a big opportunity
to learn a lot of informations about the said field.
First
Week, March 30 – April 1, 2015
On the first day of my training, March 30,2015,
it was started with a discussion. They discussed things that matters on the
field operations. I noted the acronyms that are often used in the field like
ATS, MTS, BTS and more. Each students were assigned to an Engineer who will be
in charge for training us in the company. I was assigned to Engr. Ryan Carlo A.
Asperas. It is important to familiarize the terms and acronyms being used to
understand how a cellsite work. Site selfies is also introduced because it is
important for getting datas that will be needed for completing database for
each cellsite assigned to respective FO’s (Field operation Engineers). It is done
with organize steps, and it is noted. After few discussions, we went to a site
with my co-OJT students, with the Field Operator Engineer. It was somewhere in
Porac with a site name Porac TP. We troubleshooted signals, and have checked
the rectifier and the microwave facing the other site named Porac 9. The site
was then down during that time. So, we replaced the rectifier and have repaired
the microwave. After doing that, the site went back to stable status (up site).
The next day of the training went productive
because we were on the field for repairing, testing, and troubleshooting
signals for cellsites. I learned what the MTS main function and how it works to
a site. Sometimes, not all important details are mentioned during discussions,
then it is suggested to ask the engineers to gain knowledge for the questions
that is formulated in our minds. There are times I hesitate to ask Engr.
Asperas, but I tried to set aside those hesitations for the sake of learning.
Since my two colleagues were not around, I was just the OJT student who went
out with my FO. We went to Mexico for repairing a down site named Mexico 5. It
was located far from the town which is in the middle of the field. The site was
down because of outage due to high temperature. Engr. Asperas then tried to
cool down the NPU3 instead of replacing it. After doing that, luckily it
worked. The site went to a stable status again.
After two days like working, on the third day,
I was just assigned to stay in the office for updating and inputting database
from the datas that my FO gathered from his previous database. I was just there
the whole day doing that.
Second Week, April 6 – April
11, 2015.
On
Monday, we had another discussions about field operations, just additional
informations to some important terms and acronyms about telecommunications.
That was a very long discussion. It started in the morning, and resume after
lunchbreak.
On
Tuesday, we visited a site located at Mawaque, Mabalacat, a cellsite named
MCT804. Datas that will be needed for inputting database were noted and
captured by the camera we use for that matter. We checked ACU (Aircon)
functions that is important on each container van maintaining the temperature
of the equipments to avoid overheating inside the van. Once an ACU has defections,
it should be reported immediately for replacement. We went also to Sta. Ana
site for checking signal status. And lastly, we’ve been also to PLDT Dau
cellsite for troubleshooting.On Wednesday, I was just in the office working for
database regarding to the informations we gathered from the sites we visited
previously. On Thursday, there was a discussion about GSM network how it
functions. I’ve learned the importance of MTS, its role in the system and how messages and calls is being
sent to the subscribers.On Friday, we updated database in the office with my
co-OJT students.On Saturday, we drived to SubicTel at Subic Bay, Olongapo City for delivering some
equipments needed by the FO’s working for mobile internet installations for
some events. We delivered the needed equipments that will be used in the
installation of MEOW, which means Multi Equipments On Ways. Below are just some

Third Week, April 13 – April
18, 2015.
On
Monday, I just stayed in the office working for the database. I was given the
task to finish Magalang, PLDT Mabalacat, and Angeles1 database. I inputted the
datas we have gathered. On Tuesday, another office work was given to me. I
completed another two sites for database. The next day, I worked for database
again. Lately, I enjoyed working for databases. It enhanced my skills on using
Microsoft Excel. On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, we have finished 12
database sites out of 37 sites. We still have 25 more sites to finish as the
due date is nearly approaching us.
Fourth Week, April 20 – April
25, 2015.
On
the first day of my fourth week in the training, I am almost literate on using
Microsoft Excel. That was another learning aside from working in the field.
Another day of just staying in the office working for database. The next day,
the field operator engineer who was assigned to me was not around. The other
team, with other ojt students ask me to join them in their field work. Engr.
Gomez, offered me to go with them on their site. We went to Porac for repairing
the down site. The microwave of Porac site is facing another site located in
Dila-Dila which are interconnected to each other. The FO didn’t see anything
wrong with the equipments in Porac site
but then it was still down. He decided to drive in Dila-Dila for checking the
signal status there. It is found out that this site is also down. And the
rectifier had something wrong, so it was fixed and repaired. After that, both
sites went back to normal operation. Another day of working in the field with
another field operator engineer whose Engr. Panlilio because my FO was still
not around that day. To gain more knowledge outside I decided to go with the
other team, and good thing two of the three members was absent that day, then I
go. We visited Engr. Panlilio’s site at Mimosa located inside Clark. They
gather datas about the equipments on that site. I help them determining the
azimuth angle of the antenna and its tilting. That was another learning and
knowledge. After the Mimosa site, we went to Porac site gathering datas. Again,
I was assigned to get the azimuth angles of the antennas on the tower. I was
taught the proper use of the compass they use for getting it. That was a very
long day working under the burning heat of the sun. After that site, we went to
the adjacent site of the Porac site that is located at Paralaya, Libutad,
Porac. On Friday, I was just at the office working for database. Also, the next
day, we were just in the office working for databases while our FO’s were busy
doing their office works upstairs in their office.
Fifth Week, April 27 – April 30, 2015.
The
week started with a site visit, and doing the PMR (Preventive Maintenance
Report). We went to Mabalacat3 site with my FO, Engr. Asperas and my co-OJT
student, Mark Den Allare. The site is located at Brgy. Tabun, Duquit, Mabalacat
City. We had a site selfie for data gathering purpose. Afterwards, we visited
Xevera Mabalacat site. We’ve encountered some troubles while on the site. I
have checked and listed deficiencies on the site, and found out that one of
rectifier modules is no good, so we had to replaced it for a new one. The next
day, I just continue doing and completing database in the office of Smart
Communications, Inc., at Dau, Mabalacat, Pampanga. And for the next two days,
we had been doing this database for rushing deadlines as Engr. Selom ordered
that it should be finish before May 15. Below is the illustration of the

Sixth Week, May 4 – May 9, 2015.
The
week started with a site visit at Angeles 1, we’ve done doing the Preventive
Maintenance Report (PMR), and had a troubleshooting. The site is noted as a
down site due to fiber cut.We used OTDR known as Optical Time Domain
Reflectometer for checking fiber optics length. I also checked the site’s
deficiencies. The next day, it was a staying-day at the Smart Office in Dau to
continues doing the database. To make this day productive, I paste the pictures
on the Microsoft Excel that is needed for the SID. On Wednesday, the whole day
was spent well in the office for the database
assignment. Again, we’ve done pasting those pictures taken in each sites
for SID requirements. The pictures were organizely put into their labels that
was written on the Microsoft Excel. On Thursday, It seems to be a very long day
in our team. We just had 4 site destinations. First, we wewnt to Porac TP site
that is located at Cangatba Porac for the link correction facing Porac 5. Then,
we drive to Magalang-PAC for checking the signal status beacause it is founfd
out that site as unstable. After Magalang-PAC, wwe went to Magalang TP site for
the same activity as what we did in Magalang-PAC. Lastly, we went to Magalang14
for site selfies, and deficiency cheking. The next day was another a day well
spent in the office working for the
database. The Supervisor Engineer called a meeting to finalized the plan for
May. Those final and addition sites to our FO was given then. Our team have
finalized the sites which are already completed, and also noted those are not
yet finished. On the last day of the week, Saturday, from Dau Mabalacat we went
to Talang Candaba for trtoubleshooting signal status of the site. After that we
went to Camba Arayat for repairing the down site of the 3G. When everything
became okay and done,we drive to Mexico Digitel site for site selfie, checking
and listing deficiencies that will be needed for SID.
Seventh Week, May 11 – May 15,
2015.
It
is the second to the last week of my training. On Monday, we just worked inside
the office and continued compiling the database, and have tried to fix the
errors in the database format. On Tuesday, We had site audit at Porac 9 and
Porac 3. We’ve done doing a Preventive Maintenance Report in both sites, and we
were able to get the antenna orientations of the panel antenna and microwave
antenna.
On Wednesday, We again had a site audit at
Mexico Sabanilla. We gathered datas and done updating RSL (Receive Sinal
Level). Also, I listed all the deficiencies that can be found on that site. On
Thursday, We just stayed in the office, again, working for the database
designations. Also, we helped the engineers in the office to their office works
to lessen the work. On Friday, We had database update and input the datas in Mexico Sabanilla site.
Then we went to Marque 1 and 2 cellsite to assist the ericsson contactor and have been able to
observe RUS software update there, and added a second E1 on both sites.
Eighth Week, May 18 – May 22,
2015.
This
is the last week of my training. On the first day, we had site audit at Santo
Domingo Mexico, Mexico Digitel and Magalang PAC and gathered all the datas
needed on the sites. We also restored E1
and have done troubleshooting and testing. On Tuesday, we went to Angeles 8
site located at Systems Plus College Foundation building at Angeles City. We’ve
done troubleshooting the 2G and 3G to make back up in case of emergency. The
next day, I worked for the work order in the office which Engr. De Jesus has
assigned me to do on that day. And lastly, the final day day of my training, we
went to Magalang PAC for installing the ODU at the tower on the microwave.
Also, we went Magalang TP for the signal troubleshooting.
